SAG Wiki:About
Submariner’s Advocacy Group (SAG)
The Submariner’s Advocacy Group (SAG) is an association of veteran Submariners. All individuals involved as Board Members, Founders, future Advocates, and first contact associates have earned the US Navy designation of “Qualified in Submarines” (SS). This designation signifies that they have undertaken the arduous Submarine Qualification Program, been tested and tried by their shipmates, and found to be worthy of the moniker “Submariner”.
All advocates of SAG are committed to being a voice for all Brother and Sister US Navy Submariners. Submariners share a **very unique bond forged in the depths of the oceans**. The experience of life inside a submarine, including some aspects, knowledge, and specifics, cannot be adequately described or shared with those outside of the "Silent Service".
Eligibility
Eligibility to be a part of SAG is **automatic** for anyone who is “Qualified in Submarines” and wears the “Dolphins”. There is no membership application required. If you are a Submariner, you are automatically included.
Initiatives and Goals
SAG plans to pursue several key initiatives:
- Engaging Affiliated Healthcare Professional Partners. These partners will be specialists such as Pulmonologists, Cardiologists, Oncologists, Dermatologists, Toxicologists, Ear-Nose-Throat specialists, and Neurologists, focusing on health issues potentially associated with duties onboard submarines. While these partners may not have served on submarines, SAG intends to provide them with the necessary information to assist Submariners.
- Seeking Affiliated Research Partners to analyze a nationwide Submariner Registry and data collected from US Submariners. These partners are expected to be institutions with outstanding reputations and world-class research facilities.
- Seeking partnerships with Veteran Service Organizations to leverage their services to assist veterans. This will include lobbying efforts to get legislation passed addressing proper VA services, the recognition of submarine-connected disabilities, and additional research conducted to better care for and protect all Submariners, both veterans and active duty.
These goals are described as potentially "lofty, 'pie in the sky'" [5], and achieving them will require concerted efforts. However, the source states that nothing will stop SAG from becoming the strongest voice on behalf of Submariners.
Submariners are referred to as the **"Elite of the Fleet"** and are considered deserving of elite recognition and services.
